Environment Canada blocks high proportion of media requests

Nearly one in four of the 316 media requests to interview scientists at Environment Canada in 2013 were denied, reports Postmedia News.

The statistic was included in an internal memo from deputy minister Bob Hamilton and associate deputy minister Andrea Lyon, sent to staff at the department on 11 December, which said the department was planning to improve its scientific communication.

In October, the Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada released the results of a survey that found that 90 per cent of federal scientists said they felt they were unable to speak freely about their work. The report also found that nearly one-quarter of scientists had been asked to exclude or alter scientific information in federal documents.
