Universities applaud focus on education in international trade plan

Education, research and innovation are some of the top priorities of the Canadian government's foreign policy and trade plan.

The plan, published on 27 November, highlights the importance of international education and research in developing the country’s trade ties, and pledges to develop a new international education strategy to attract more international students to Canada and improve the links between Canadian universities and their foreign counterparts.

The Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada welcomed the focus on education, and offered some suggestions for the strategy, including doubling the number of international students coming to Canada, establishing a new mechanism for supporting large-scale international research collaboration, and creating a programme to send 50,000 Canadian students a year abroad by 2022.
