Young researchers at centre of NSERC strategy

The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council has said it will review all its funding programmes to give more support to early-career researchers as part of its strategy.

The strategy, published on 7 December and intended to guide the council until 2020, says that at the moment young researchers are “well trained and prepared to make their mark, but they are stalled by the lack of opportunities and resources to make meaningful independent contributions to science”.

Improving support for early-career researchers is one of five goals in the strategy. A related goal is to foster a “science and engineering culture” in Canada by becoming the focal point for efforts to raise awareness and enthusiasm for science among young people. Part of this will be to fight negative stereotypes of scientists among policymakers and the public.
