Trudeau puts his mark on innovation funding

Prime minister Justin Trudeau has announced funding for two innovation projects focused on clean water technologies and stem cell commercialisation.

The Centre for Commercialization of Regenerative Medicine in Toronto will receive C$20 million from the Advanced Manufacturing Fund to create the Centre for Advanced Therapeutic Cell Technologies, Trudeau announced on 14 January. This will be a collaboration between the CCRM and several industry partners, including GE Healthcare, aimed at accelerating the development and use of cell manufacturing technologies.

The government funding for cell manufacturing comes with several targets: five patent applications, the commercialisation of 30 products or processes, and the creation of almost 400 jobs by the end of 2018.
