Innovation ‘sandboxes’ to stimulate Nova Scotia’s entrepreneurs

The Nova Scotia government has teamed up with the province’s universities and colleges to create four “sandboxes” where students, innovators and industry can develop new business ideas.

The sandboxes are based on successful programmes at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of Waterloo. The video game Guitar Hero, and the e-ink used in e-readers such as the Kindle both came out of MIT’s version. Each sandbox will offer a combination of academic programming and entrepreneurial, professional and management resources.

The province is providing each sandbox with $150,000 a year for three years, at the end of which they will be expected to become self-sustaining.
