Federal government steps in to save Quebec observatory

The federal government has stepped in to fund the Mont-Mégantic Observatory in Quebec after it announced it would have to shut down on 1 April due to a lack of funds, according to CBC News.

The observatory, one of the largest and most important such facilities in eastern North America, has been struggling for money since 2008 when the federal government cut the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council programme that funded.

Since then it has relied on a grant from the Canada Foundation for Innovation, which was actually meant to support new infrastructure, and money from the University of Montreal and University of Laval, which jointly run the facility.
