Government supports clean tech in Alberta

Eight clean-technology projects in Alberta, many focused on cleaning up the oil industry, have been granted $20.6 million from Sustainable Development Technologies Canada’s SD Tech fund.

The projects include several that aim to make the oil industry cleaner, by removing sulphur, heavy metals and acids from heavy oil, recycling used oil, and detecting leaks in pipelines. Other projects include using waste heat from incinerators to generate electricity, and growing plants indoors using less energy than traditional greenhouses.

“Our government is positioning Canada as a global leader in the clean technology sector by supporting innovative projects aimed at creating jobs and growing our economy while contributing to a cleaner environment,” said Tim Uppal, Conservative MP for Edmonton-Sherwood Park, Alberta, speaking on behalf of natural resources minister Greg Rickford. “We are proud to invest in these innovative companies, and the projects announced today will create jobs for Albertans and continue to place Canada at the forefront of the clean-tech industry.”
