Nova Scotia plans changes to reporting requirements

Nova Scotia's provincial government has announced plans to change the financial accountability rules for universities this spring.

"Nova Scotians clearly value our universities, but they also believe universities can do a better job controlling their costs, and should be more accountable for results," said advanced education minister Kelly Regan.

The rules will require more standard reporting, give government a closer look at the universities’ books, and allow the government to withhold grants in extreme cases. The universities will also be given more freedom to set their own tuition fees.
