Dissenting academics need to be heard, Royal Society of Canada tells Turkey

The Royal Society of Canada has called on Turkey to end its crackdown on academics who signed a petition criticising military operations in the Kurdish areas of the country.

The International Human Rights Network of Academies and Scholarly Societies, of which the RSC is a member, has strongly opposed the government crackdown, which has seen more than 1,000 academics investigated under anti-terrorism laws for their opposition to the military campaign against the Kurds.

The RSC wrote to the Turkish ambassador to Canada, Selçuk Ünal, as well as Canada’s ambassador to Turkey, expressing its concerns and asking that the issue be raised with the Turkish government.
