Smart grid research network launched

The University of New Brunswick is collaborating on a Smart Grid Innovation Network to support the development of new electricity generation and transmission technologies along with provincial utility NB Power and electronics manufacturer Siemens.

SGIN will provide a place for businesses to design, develop and test smart-grid-related products and services, offering start-ups and established companies a testing environment to overcome technology hurdles. The network is composed of three interconnected labs: the Smart Grid Research Lab at UNB, the Interoperability Lab at Siemens, and the Products and Services Lab at NB Power.

The university and NB Power are each investing C$2 million in the network over the next five years, with Siemens providing another C$1 million. The federal government will provide C$2 million, and the province C$840,000.
