Ontario invests in northern geoscience

Ontario has agreed to provide C$5 million over seven years to support a research consortium led by Laurentian University in Sudbury to study how and where deposits of base and precious metals are formed.

The research is intended to help mining companies to find ore bodies and to boost innovation in northern Ontario’s mining industry.

“Ontario’s capacity to compete globally in the mining sector depends on how well we can harness our research and innovation strengths,” said northern development minister Michael Gravelle in a statement. “Laurentian University’s research consortium supports Ontario’s renewed Mineral Development Strategy, which is providing a blueprint to ensure Ontario remains a global leader in mineral development for years to come.”
