Petition calls for restored funding for Cochrane Canada

Science campaign group Evidence for Democracy has launched a petition calling on the federal government to restore funding to Cochrane Canada.

Cochrane Canada, which produces systematic reviews of medical research, used to receive $17 million a year in non-competitive funding from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. But last summer the funding agency decided to end the funding, and told Cochrane to apply for money through the agency’s usual funding channels.

“Cochrane Canada is crucial to how Canadians access trusted, unbiased health information,” the petition says. The campaign group is calling on federal health minister Jane Philpott to restore funding to ensure health decisions are based on the best possible evidence.
