Construction of Chinese spallation source begins

A ceremony was held in the city of Dougguan in Guangdong province on 20 October to mark the commencement of construction of the China Spallation Neutron Source.

The 1.7 billion yuan ($267m) CSNS will be south China’s first major science facility and China’s first spallation source. The project was approved by the central government in 2005 and is expected to become operational in 2018.
