Science puts to sea

China launched a newly designed scientific research vessel in the waters off central Hubei province on 30 November, reports state news agency Xinhua.

The vessel, 99.6 metres long and 17.8 metres wide, has been named the Kexue, or Science. It is equipped with a podded electronic propulsion system, water body detection, atmospheric exploration, deep-sea environment exploration and remote sensing information research facilities, according to its chief engineer Yu Jianjun.
