Plans to plumb new depths announced

The Chinese government has published a document outlining its ocean science and technology development plans to 2015 as part of measures to increase spending to boost the country’s maritime economy, reports China Daily.

“We will expand the depths and scope of oceanic research and improve our understanding of the ocean, with special focuses on the polar regions and deep sea environments,” said Liu Cigui, head of the State Oceanic Administration (SOA) at a meeting on 16 September.
