R&D expenditure rises 22%

The amount spent by the Chinese government on R&D last year increased by 21.9 per cent to 861 billion yuan ($137bn), according to a report published by the Chinese National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on 22 February, reports China Daily.

The 2011 spend is the equivalent of 1.8 per cent of the country’s gross domestic product, which grew 9.2 per cent to 47.16 trillion yuan last year.
