Government urged to lift crop moratorium

Scientists from India, Switzerland and the US have called on the Indian government to lift a moratorium on biotechnology crop R&D and the commercial release of Bt Brinjal, an engineered form of aubergine, reports the Hindu.

At a day-long conference, ‘Biotechnology Crops for Food Security in India’, the Bangalore Declaration was adopted urging the government to “take urgent measures to remove unjustified and arbitrary constraints that jeopardise the functioning and development of the Indian agri-biotech R&D”.
