China has four more universities than last year in the top 500 listed in the latest Academic Ranking of World Universities, known as the Shanghai ranking, published on 15 August.
This year China, including Hong Kong and Taiwan, has 42 universities in the top 500, overtaking the UK with 38. However, China has not yet reached the top 100, which is dominated by US universities, occupying 53 places, including 17 of the top 20 places.
