Japanese universities are ranked highest in Asia in the latest Academic Ranking of World Universities, known as the Shanghai ranking, published on 15 August.
The University of Tokyo (No. 20), Kyoto University (26), Osaka University (83) and Nagoya University (96) hold their places in the top 100. Their nearest Asian competitors are National Taiwan University, National University of Singapore and Seoul National University of South Korea in the 101-150 group.
