China plans research centres along the silk road

China plans to launch two research centres next year in the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region of north-west China in order to expand its presence in central Asia, according to the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

The two hubs—an ecology and environment research centre and a central Asia science and technology centre—will be designed to “facilitate cooperation with scientists from central Asia”.

The ecology centre will have satellite branches in Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and Tajikistan.
