China launches high-definition satellite

China has launched Gaofen 1, the first in a series of five high-definition satellites for observing the Earth, Xinhua has reported.

The satellite, launched on 27 April, was developed by the China Academy of Space Technology and is part of the High Definition Earth Observation System (HDEOS), the article says.

All five HDEOS satellites are planned to be launched by 2016. They are expected to contribute to significant improvements in China’s disaster relief and environmental monitoring efforts.
