Japan and Ethiopia enter into low carbon partnership

The government of Japan has signed a collaboration agreement with Ethiopia on low carbon technology development and joint efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The Japan-Ethiopia Low Carbon Growth Partnership, which was signed on 27 May in Addis Ababa, sets out a series of programmes both countries will employ to reduce emissions. This includes promoting sustainable technologies and energy sources in both countries, and running a series of mitigation projects.

However, the agreement also contains a clause that will allow Japan to credit emission reductions achieved in Ethiopia to its own ‘accounts’, meaning it will have to carry out fewer emission reduction efforts at home to achieve international targets set out in the Kyoto Protocol. Japan is already running similar partnerships with Mongolia and Bangladesh.
