China to revamp university IT network

The Chinese government plans to invest in digital R&D to upgrade its national education and research network.

The China Education and Research Network, established in 1994, is a large-scale computer network that connects more than 2,000 universities and research institutes across the country.

According to an article published by the news site People’s Daily, China intends to spend 20 million yuan ($3.3m) on R&D that will feed into developing the network. “Independent R&D should be strengthened so as to make breakthroughs in internet technology,” Wu Jianping, head of the expert panel of the network, is quoted as saying.
