China has launched a satellite into space from its station in the north-west of the Gobi desert.
Xinhua, China’s state press agency, said the satellite, which was propelled into orbit from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center on 31 March, would be used to “conduct scientific experiments in space”.
The Shijian-11-06 is the sixth in a series of satellites launched by the Chinese government since 2009, according to NASAspaceflight.com, an online news resource in the United States. The US site, which describes the launch as "secretive", says the Shijian-11-06 is believed to be an early-warning satellite.
