China and Israel to cooperate on societal challenges

The science ministries of China and Israel have pledged a total of $6 million for joint technology and challenge-based research.

An agreement signed on 14 December targets fields including nanotechnology, 3D printing and computer science, according to the Times of Israel newspaper. It will also fund R&D to tackle societal problems, including projects on the human brain, renewable energy, smart cities and ageing.

China will provide $5m and Israel will provide $1m. The deal was struck between Wan Gang, the Chinese science minister, and Ofir Akunis, his Israeli counterpart.
