Telecom giants boost China’s European patent filings

China increased the number of patents it filed with the European Patent Office by nearly 20 per cent between 2013 and 2014—largely thanks to the telecommunications firms Huawei and ZTE.

A statement by the Chinese Academy of Sciences says that applications to the EPO from China reached 26,472 in 2014, accounting for about 9 per cent of the total number. However, China only received 2 per cent of the awarded patents.

Huawei and ZTE accounted for nearly 70 per cent of all Chinese applications in 2014.
