Modi backs plans to nurture Indian biotech

The Indian government has announced that it will implement a national biotechnology strategy by 2020, with the aim of increasing turnover in the field to $100 billion.

Under the initiative, Narendra Modi’s government will set up 40 biotech incubators and 150 technology-transfer offices across the country, creating a network that can promote the commercialisation of biotech-based products..

In his announcement on 30 December in New Delhi, the science minister Harsh Vardhan set out plans to focus on biotechnology for improving health, food supply and energy production. The strategy will include “significant” investment in R&D, the government said, although the amount to be spent was not specified.
