CRISPR human trials begin in China

Scientists from China have become the first in the world to inject a person with cells that contain genes edited using the CRISPR-Cas9 technique.

The injection was part of a clinical trial to treat aggressive lung cancer at the West China Hospital in Chengdu. The CRISPR-Cas9 technique combines a DNA-cutting enzyme with a molecular guide that can be programmed to tell the enzyme where to cut.

According to Nature news, the move will accelerate a worldwide race to get gene-edited cells into the clinic.
