Chen Baosheng has been appointed as China’s minister of education, replacing Yuan Guiren, in a move being reported as a surprise change.
Chen’s appointment was announced on 1 July, and was made because Yuan had reached the age of retirement for public officials, University World News reported.
“No one anticipated the appointment of the new minister. He is a complete outsider,” the site reported Qiang Zha, an education researcher at York University in Canada, as saying.
