University president becomes Palestine’s prime minister

The former head of An-Najah National University, Rami Hamdallah, has been sworn in as the prime minister of the Palestinian Authority.

Hamdallah, a British-educated linguistics professor, had been president of An-Najah National University in Nablus since 1998. He was named as prime minister by Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas on 2 June.

In his time at An-Najah, Hamdallah significantly expanded the university’s research system to make it the largest university in the West Bank, according to Ynetnews.
