Saudi Arabia gets laser lab

King Saud University in Riyadh has inaugurated the region’s first hi-tech laser laboratory, built in collaboration with institutions in Germany.

Researchers at the Attosecond Science Laboratory will study electrons using an attosecond laser, which generates ultrashort pulses of light to image extremely fast-moving particles. It has been developed in conjunction with the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich and the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics in Garching, and was inaugurated on 16 February.

There is already a similar facility in Germany, and the institutions wanted to extend the technology to give researchers in the Arab world better access.
