Syrian heritage takes another blow

The head of Unesco has called on military forces to halt attacks on cultural sites and buildings, after the National Museum of Aleppo was shelled.

A statement from the Syrian Directorate-General for Antiquities and Museums confirmed that the attacks on 11 July involved “a large number of missiles and explosive bombs, fired by armed extremist gangs, which badly damaged the structure of the museum”.

Responding to the events, Irina Bokova, Unesco’s director-general, said: “The destruction of the museum is a new blow to the heritage and history of all Syrians. I once again call on all parties to stop the violence and keep cultural heritage out of the conflict.”
