Funding Insight returns from its Easter break to tackle the thorny issue of the Knowledge Exchange Framework. In our Know How article this week, Hamish McAlpine spells out why researchers’ fears that the KEF will add to their administrative burden are unfounded. We also feature a Global Challenges Research Fund double-bill, looking at winning bids on opposite ends of the size spectrum: a GCRF hub worth nearly £20 million and a networking grant worth £20,000.

Have you considered how you could make your research KEFable? No? Well that’s fine, says Hamish McAlpine, head of knowledge exchange data and evidence at Research England, because there is no need. The KEF “will not force you to do anything that an engaged, sensible, autonomous academic would not ordinarily do”. Also we should never use the word “KEFable” ever again, he urges.
