Top PI: Richard Hague, additive manufacturing director

Richard Hague directs the Centre for Innovative Manufacturing in Additive Manufacturing, based at the University of Nottingham thanks to a £6-million grant from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council. He tells Rebecca Hill about securing the funding and working with industry.

I'd been working in additive manufacturing since the 90s. I used to be at Loughborough University, where we had two five-year tranches of funding for an [EPSRC] Innovative Manufacturing Research Centre, but it was clear [the funding] wasn't going to be renewed. So in 2009 we had to decide: do we call it a day or—if we want to keep working in the area—do we do more applied research, or go into more depth? We decided to focus on the basic side and work towards setting up a centre with more multi-functionality, with the view that there would be EPSRC funding to bid on from 2011. We went to Nottingham because we wanted to move into a research-intensive university with a broad base of good basic science.
