How to get by without government funding

Italy's government has withdrawn almost entirely from funding research, but the Polytechnic University of Milan had a success rate of 26 per cent in Framework 7. Stefania Grotti, its head of research services, tells James Field about the university's strategy.

“This year’s strategy is to promote the university better at EU level,” says Stefania Grotti, the head of research services at the Polytechnic University of Milan. “We have joined a lot of networks to exchange best practice and to introduce our research areas to other universities.”

She says the university was the most successful Italian higher education institution in Framework 7, with a success rate of 26 per cent. “We received €90 million for 280 projects,” Grotti says.
