When Alden Gregory, a curator at the Historic Royal Palaces, put together his first ever bid after the palaces won independent research organisation status, he knew he wouldn’t struggle for impact. Jenny Maukola reports.
Independent Research Organisations (IROs)—designated organisations that can compete on equal terms with universities for research council funding—have enjoyed growing success with the Arts and Humanities Research Council in recent years.
A Decade of Success, an AHRC report published on 28 June, made this clear and celebrated IROs’ ability to achieve impact with their funding. Of the top 30 visitor attractions in the UK, 14 now hold IRO status, the report said, adding that applications from others would be welcome.
