The Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund might be making the headlines, but researchers in manufacturing should not overlook the EPSRC’s Manufacturing the Future theme, Rebecca Williams tells Lindsay McKenzie.
The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council’s Manufacturing the Future theme represents 10 per cent of the council’s entire portfolio, and remains critical to the EPSRC, says Williams, one of four portfolio managers of the theme.
When the theme was introduced in 2011, academics in manufacturing were used to being told what strategic projects to carry out. However, the council is increasingly encouraging researchers to “come to us with their ideas”, says Williams.
