Opportunity profile: Starter grants for renal researchers

Kidney Patient Research Partnership Grants have two roles—to spur patient-centred pilot studies in renal disease, and to provide a first rung on the career ladder in clinical research. Lila Randall reports.

The British Renal Society (BRS) has run the Kidney Patient Research Partnership with different organisations for 17 years. For the past five years, it has been working with Kidney Care UK, formerly known as the British Kidney Patient Association.

The partnership’s grant scheme has goals similar to the Academy of Medical Sciences’ Starter Grants (profiled here) in that it aims to support pilot studies and give a early-career boost to professionals working in clinical medicine or care, allowing them to become more active in research and hopefully progress to applying for fellowships with larger funders.
