Truth telling: Making Framework 9 relevant (2/2)

In the second essay based on his keynote speech at April’s EARMA conference, William Cullerne Bown urges universities to take a stronger stance in their quest for truth in these increasingly turbulent times.

If the Framework programme is threatened by irrelevance, Brexit and populism, then what can universities do to resist its decline?

We should look to aspects of universities that are more fundamental than the body of knowledge they teach, the labs that they run or their position in league tables. These include autonomy, a spirit of inquiry, rigorous reasoning, and appetite to challenge authority. They are the stuff of law, journalism and democratic government, and as integral to the West itself as they are to academia.
