My winning proposal: Capturing Cardiff’s creative cluster

Justin Lewis led a bid that won £5.7 million from the AHRC as part of the council’s Creative Clusters scheme. Listening—both to his partners and the AHRC—was essential for success, he tells Sophie Inge.

Justin’s top tips

  • To build partnerships, get involved in a field first to build up trust.
  • On big bids, your industry partners are your eyes and ears on the ground, so make sure you’re listening to them.
  • Take feedback from the funder seriously, as this is an opportunity to refine the bid.
  • Beware of overreach on big bids; a more focused approach might be called for.

Each of the nine winners of the Arts and Humanities Research Council’s Creative Clusters scheme, which were announced in September, will receive between £4 million to £6m over four and a half years.
