My winning proposal: Spin-out brings in NERC Impact Award

The application for NERC’s Impact Awards is straightforward and is good practice for Research Excellence Framework case studies. And if you succeed you get a cheque for up to £30,000, as 2015 winner Stephen Boult tells Martha Henriques.

Stephen’s top top tips

  • Where it’s possible and relevant, bring out the economic impact of your project as this is arguably the most unambiguous form of impact.
  • Show the depth of interaction with the group of people that were engaged in your project.
  • If in doubt, give the scheme a crack: the application is straightforward.

When the instruments necessary to measure water quality that Stephen Boult needed for his research didn’t exist, he and his team decided to make their own. This led to a spin-out company called Salamander.
