Applicants to last year’s ESRC Governance after Brexit competition—which will run again this year—had only two months to prepare bids. Grant-winner Colin Murray tells Sophie Inge how his team pulled everything together in time.
Colin’s top tips
- Listen to or attend as many ESRC advice sessions as you can in the run-up to the bid. They are highly valuable.
- Think about what elements of previous research projects can be developed and incorporated into a bid.
- Remember that if a bid does develop previous research it must still contain innovative elements absent from the original project.
- Make every effort to finalise partner agreements as soon as possible.
- Move your deadlines forward internally so that you have a working draft ready early.
Colin Murray, a reader in public law at Newcastle University, led a bid that won £201,772 in the Innovation Grants category of the Economic and Social Research Council’s Governance after Brexit scheme.
