Opportunity profile: Embedding computer security

The EPSRC has up to £8 million for research on a platform to better protect computers from cyberattacks

Top tips

  • All proposals must engage with the technology platform at the centre of this scheme.
  • Remember that this is not a typical EPSRC grant and the research will be carried out as part of a larger programme.
  • Show that you understand this funding offers the chance to be at the forefront of the next wave of computer technology.
  • Proposals should state what they wish to research, not pitch for research which will get them to that point.
  • There is a £10,000 limit on what equipment can be bought with the funding.

The Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund’s Digital Security by Design challenge is focused on ways to make computers more secure and protect them from cyberattacks. It builds on work by the University of Cambridge, which developed a technology called Cheri, or Capability Hardware Enhanced RISC Instructions, that can protect against security vulnerabilities.
