My winning proposal: The hidden faces of Cern

Public engagement in the physical sciences often focuses on space-age equipment, but Vanja Garaj took a different approach to win a STFC Spark Award, he tells Sophie Inge: he is putting together a photo-ethnographic catalogue of Cern staff.

The Spark Awards supplanted the Science and Technology Facilities Council’s long-running Public Engagement Small Awards Scheme in 2017. They offer up to £15,000 for public engagement projects within the STFC’s remit—astronomy, solar and planetary science, particle physics, particle astrophysics, cosmology, nuclear physics and accelerator science—that would otherwise struggle to get off the ground.

The scheme is open to academics and non-academics, and the next deadline for applications is 2 May.
