Revamped NHMRC grant scheme aims for inclusivity, but gender gap persists for senior researchers
The first winners of the National Health and Medical Research Council’s new Investigator Grants were announced in August 2019, marking a new era for Australia’s premiere medical funder.
Investigator Grants are part of a revamp of the NHMRC’s funding model, accounting for almost 40 per cent of the total NHMRC funding in 2019. Open to candidates across all career stages, the grants are designed to provide top-flight researchers with flexibility. In addition to five years of salary support, the grants provide research funding that can be spent flexibly on projects.
