For success in the Royal Society’s Westminster pairing scheme, be upfront about your goals

Top tips:

  • Science communication experience is important, if not essential, for success in this scheme; previous involvement in policy or politics is not.
  • Be clear about what you hope to get out of the experience.
  • Emphasise the relevance of your field of research to policymaking and vice versa.

The Royal Society Pairing Scheme offers researchers a week’s peek behind the scenes in Westminster. The popular programme, which gets about 250 applications a year, matches scientists with an interest in the policymaking process with members of parliament or civil servants with the goal of introducing researchers and policymakers to the reality of each other’s working lives.
