A rigorous understanding of success provides pointers for winning grants and career accolades

When, like me, your job involves increasing researchers’ chances of obtaining funding the word “success” is important. Look around at the articles on this website and you will realise how much concepts such as success and “research quality” can occupy our minds. Still, it is striking how much we take these concepts for granted.

Before examining success itself, it’s worth briefly looking at research quality. All research funders claim to award the projects with the “highest research quality”, but what does that actually mean? Can research quality be measured in a quantitative and objective way?
