My winning proposal: Crowdsource for ERC success

A top research idea and the input of friends secured a coveted ERC Starting Grant

Top tips

  • Input by non-specialists is critical to making your proposal have broad appeal
  • Spend the last weeks before the deadline crafting the style and use the ERC’s own language
  • Run your idea by mentors and colleagues to make sure it’s defensible
  • Even if you don’t feel ready to apply, do it anyway and use the feedback next time round

After a delayed start to 2021 while details of Horizon Europe were wrangled over, the European Research Council is back to speed with its funding calls. The first deadline is for Starting Grants on 8 April, offering up to €1.5 million over five years to researchers with between 2-7 years’ research experience after their PhD.
