The Padi Foundation takes the plunge, with marine research projects other funders might refuse

On 1 November, marine biology funder the Padi Foundation will once again open its Research Grants to applicants anywhere in the world. Grants may be worth up to $12,000 each although projects usually receive between $5,000 and $10,000. Grants do not cover overhead or other indirect expenses. The scheme closes to applications on 15 January 2023.

In October 2019, Andy Saxon, a director at the foundation, related what it looks for on bids, and also explained the foundation’s penchant for unusual research. “If it seems outlandish,” he said, “we will listen to it.”
