Unpicking EU finances

Jill Burton has been the EU accountant at the University of Nottingham for more than 14 years. Here she tells Anthea Lipsett about her role and how Horizon 2020 finances differ from those of previous Framework programmes.

I came to the university in this role at the tail end of Framework 6, just as Framework 7 was starting. At that time it was just me and one other person dealing with EU finances, but I now have a team of six project managers for all EU-funded projects.

Most of our European grants are from Framework projects, though we do have some others from, for example, the European Space Agency, EuropeAid and the European Cooperation in Science and Technology programme. They all have their own rules and methods, leading to further challenges for the team.
